The PSP does not overheat under normal circumstances. It can get considerably warm during prolonged periods of use when WiFi is on, but these temperatures are considered within normal limits.
However, although the design does not favour overheating, a mechanical failure or malfunction, or normal aging combined with misuse and lack of maintenance, may cause unusually high temperatures, which may be, apart from annoying, detrimental to your PSP.
