The 2DS is Nintendo's solution in order to reach the market of 8th gen handheld consoles at a price much more affordable than the 3DS, with its main feature being the absence of the 3D screen.

A few differences allow, in combination with the 2D screen, the dramatic reduction of production costs, such as the console's design. A "slate-like" form factor which doesn't fold, along with few differences in the manufacturing materials, slightly increase its weight.

Finally, the 2DS outputs mono sound (with stereo avaible via headphones)
