What is a Laser Reader?
It’s the mechanism on the Optical Drive that allows reading your optical media.
The optical disks have a photosensitive film on their backside. When such a disk is written, a beam etches tiny fluctuations on its surface, permanently imprinting the binary data.
The reader then uses its laser and measures the light’s properties to perceive the fluctuations and retrieve the stored information, which is in turn digitized and translated to conventional binary data.
The success or failure of this read greatly depents on the laser reader’s good operation, as it is the most sensitive part of the Playstation 3 optical drive.
Damage to the Laser Reader
In case of reader malfunction, you will face one or more of the following problems:
- The Playstation 3 does not recognize your games, or it does so inconsistently.
- The console is too slow at loading your disks, even though their condition is fine
- Excessive noise during operation.
- Failure of proper movie playback.
Cause of Laser Reader failure
Damage to the laser reader may occur from bad usage, manufacturer defect, or normal aging. Using incompatible media may also reduce your laser reader’s lifespan.
