VESA New standard of DisplayPort 1.4

VESA New standard of DisplayPort 1.4

The VESA (Video & Electronics Standards Association) announced the new standard of DisplayPort 1.4, and its characteristics. As reserves and two versions (classic and the eDP (embedded DisplayPort), which was upgraded to version 1.4a a year ago. The agency was working on this technology for more than a year and this upgrade is promising, as it has significant changes in the capacitance.

The DisplayPort 1.4 is the first protocol includes the Display Stream Compression technology (DSC). The VESA warrants the DSC visually lossless, and achieves compression of up to 3: 1. It is compatible with the Intel Thunderbolt and USB-C interface, which means that the next generation of displays can be linked to the appropriate systems with one, miniature cable.

The DSC was first used in DisplayPort cables as the mobile is much smaller in a cell than in desktop computers. To function correctly in DSC compression algorithm, one should know that the information flow is accurate, as any inaccuracies destroy decoded output which is immediately apparent to the user. So to avoid such a problem DisplayPort 1.4 added forward error correction which confirms that the flow of information is correct.

The protocol supports 5120×2880 resolutions (5K) at 60Hz with High Dynamic Range and 7680×4320 (8K) at 60 Hz with HDR and normal operation. The Gamers who prefer high refresh rates and resolutions can not be overlooked, since the DP 1.4 supports 120Hz to 4K monitors and 32 channels of audio!

This technology of course will take time until we see the market. AMD is the new architecture of Polaris, which will be released in 2016, will support the DisplayPort 1.3.

Polaris Architecture

The DP 1.4 has a much greater bandwidth than HDMI 2.0, the finishing technology in 4K and 60 Hz. The AMD and NVIDIA have historically compete and interfaces with the first to emphatically supports the DisplayPort and the second in HDMI. Who will dominate the market it is difficult to judge yet. However the AMD Polaris supports DP1.3 and the HDMI 2.0b.
